Embark on a captivating journey through time in Cusco, the former heart of the mighty Inca Empire. Your adventure begins at the awe-inspiring Coricancha, once a tribute to the sun god and now an intriguing blend of Inca and colonial architecture. As you stand in the majestic Plaza de Armas (Plaza Mayor de Cusco), you’ll be fascinated by the Cusco Cathedral, a testament to Spanish influence.
Next, ascend to the hills overlooking Cusco to explore Saqsaywaman (Sacsayhuamán or Saksaywaman), a 15th-century marvel that baffles modern engineers. Marvel at the precision of its massive interlocking stones as you ponder the ingenuity of Inca builders.
Your path then leads to Qenqo (Q’enco Archaeological Complex), a sacred site where ancient agricultural rituals once breathed life into the empire. Finally, discover the enigmatic Puca Pucara (Puka Pukara Archaeological Complex) or ‘Red Fort’. This multifaceted complex, complete with plazas, baths, and towers, is believed to have served as a rest stop for the Inca ruler’s entourage.

Your adventure begins with a scenic train ride from Ollanta (Estación Ferroviaria de Ollantaytambo), observing breathtaking Andean landscapes for 90 minutes until you reach Aguas Calientes. This charming town, often called ‘Machu Picchu Pueblo,’ serves as the gateway to Peru’s most renowned archaeological wonder.
From here, a short but exhilarating bus ride ascends the mountainside, bringing you face-to-face with the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu (Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu). This architectural marvel, whose name translates to ‘Old Mountain,’ once served as a secret retreat for the great Inca ruler Pachacutec. As you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, you’ll be struck by the ingenuity of Inca engineering and the site’s harmonious blend with its natural surroundings.
After immersing yourself in the mysteries of this ancient citadel, descend to Aguas Calientes for a well-deserved lunch.
