Delhi

The capital of India, Delhi, offers a variety of experiences for tourists.  

Commonly, Delhi is divided into Old Delhi and New Delhi, but this division is not geographical but rather a distinction in how the history of Delhi is represented in its different historical periods.

Old Delhi is seen as the historical city of Delhi, while New Delhi was the capital of the  British Indian Empire until 1947.

Why is Jama Masjid famous? 

Jama Masjid in Old Delhi is a popular tourist attraction for being one of India’s most prominent and largest mosques. The mosque is made of white marble and red sandstone; its construction started in 1644 and finished in 1656.

Can anyone visit Jama Masjid?

Anyone of any religion or race can visit Jama Masjid. It’s important to remove your shoes before entering the mosque and dress modestly. Sometimes, the mosque might be closed during prayer times.

Jama Masjid is easily accessible from many parts of the city; it has three domes, many smaller domes, and two towering minarets. There is a pool in the center of the mosque, a prayer hall featuring calligraphy work and marble delicately designed.

You can get access to climb one of the minarets to enjoy a panoramic view of Old Delhi.

🇮🇳 Rajghat

The memorial, Rajghat, is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, who was a leader of the Indian independence movement. 

It’s located close to the Yamuna River in Delhi. The memorial, constructed by the architect Vanu G., consists of black marble with an eternal flame in the center. The eternal flame represents that Gandhi’s philosophy and spirit will continue inspiring the people.

The memorial is surrounded by green gardens, trees, and many pathways. Many leaders around the world go to visit the memorial. It’s a perfect place for quiet contemplation.

Close to Rajghat is the Gandhi Smriti, known as the Birla House. This is where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days of life, including his final prayer.

The memorial is open throughout the year.

🇮🇳 Qutub Minar

Why is Qutub Minar famous in Delhi? Qutub Minar is a historical monument that can be found in the Qutub Complex. This is a minaret from around the year 1192. It’s a major tourist attraction.

Qutub Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many Indo-Islamic architectures, 73 meters in height (240 feet), and made of marble and red sandstone. 

What is the story of Qutub Minar? Qutub Minar is a minaret used for the call for prayer by the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, Qutub-ud-din Aibak. His successors continued the construction, but the minaret was named after its founder.

Is Qutub Minar the tallest building in Delhi? Qutub Minar is considered the tallest tower in India.

Can you go on top of Qutub Minar? No, since a tragic event that happened in 1981 involved a problem with the lighting system.

Inside the Qutub complex, you can also find the iron pillar of Delhi, which is an iron pillar from the 4th to 5th century CE and is around 7 meters (23 feet) in height. 

The Alai Darwaza structure is inside the Qutub complex and shows Indo-Muslim architecture.

Also very close to Qutub Minar, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque is one of the earliest mosques in India. It incorporates construction materials from Jain and Hindu temples.

🇮🇳 Red Fort Delhi

Why is Red Fort famous in Delhi? The Red Fort is a fortress famous for its Mughal architectural creativity, also known as Lal Qila. The Mughal architecture refers to the Indo-Islamic architecture of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries developed by the Mughal emperors of that era. 

The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan constructed this fortress in 1638, and it served as the primary residence for many Mughal emperors for around 200 years. 

Is it worth going inside the Red Fort in Delhi? The Red Fort Delhi is a must-visit in India due to its historical significance. Its architecture combines Timurid, Indian, and Persian styles. There were many pavilions, courtyards, and halls inside, as well as a street market known as Chhatta Chowk, where merchants sold different kinds of goods to the emperor’s household.

The fortress’s two main halls are the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) and the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience).

The Palace of Colors, also known as Rang Mahal, is located inside the Red Fort Delhi and was used by the emperor’s wives and mistresses. It has many colorful decorative elements.

Also, the Moti Masjid, also known as Pearl Mosque, stands out for its white marble material.

What is the difference between the Red Fort in Agra and the Red Fort in Delhi? The major difference is the size since the Red Fort in Agra is much smaller than the Red Fort in Delhi. The Red Fort in Agra does not have huge lawns and gardens compared to the Red Fort in Delhi. The architecture of both forts is similar but not the same.

The Red Fort in Delhi is a principal location to celebrate India’s Independence Day, and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

🇮🇳 Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

Which is the most famous Gurudwara in Delhi? The Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is the most famous gurdwara in Delhi. A gurdwara is known as a place for gathering and worship for Sikhs. Any religion or race is welcome inside a gurdwara.

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is close to Connaught Place, which is the financial, commercial, and business center in Delhi.

What is the history behind Gurudwara Bangla Sahib? This gurudwara was previously a bungalow owned by the general Jai Singh I during the Mughal Empire. A bungalow is a house or cottage, typically of small size, with many dormer windows and verandas. The Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji was using the place as a residence.

The sarovar, a holy pond, inside the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib has spiritual significance for the place, which combines perfectly with the serene atmosphere for solace and spiritual connection.

A community kitchen, langar, is located inside this gurudwara and serves free meals to anyone. Its purpose is to represent the Sikh principles of equality. There is also a hospital providing medical services as one of the humanitarian activities inside Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.

The main prayer hall consists of a golden dome and modern and traditional Sikh architecture.

Is India Gate worth visiting? The India Gate is worth visiting because it is one of the most relevant symbols of Indian national pride. 

The gate is an arch-shaped war memorial.

The Indian Gate is used to perform ceremonies, particularly during Independence Day and Republic Day. At night, the gate is illuminated, producing a beautiful sight.

Around the surroundings of the India Gate, you can find places for picnics and walks.

Why is India Gate famous in Delhi? The India Gate in Delhi is famous for commemorating the more than 70,000 Indian soldiers from the three armed services – the Army, Navy, and Air Force, who fought against the British Army during World War I.

The gate is made of red sandstone and has a height of 42 meters (138 feet). There is an eternal flame under the arch called the Amar Jawan Jyoti (the Flame of the Immortal Soldier).

Is the India Gate open to the public? Yes, the India Gate is a popular spot for tourists and locals. The area around the memorial monument is known as Rajpath, with many gardens and lawns that are constantly maintained. There is no entry fee.

🇮🇳 Rashtrapati Bhavan - President's House

Where does the president stay in Delhi? Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the President of India. During British rule, it was known as the Viceroy’s House.

The residence is a major historical and architectural building that is used as an example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The structure was completed in 1929.

Is Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi the largest? Rashtrapati Bhavan is known to be the second-largest residence for a head of state in the world. The first one is the Quirinal Palace in Italy.

The residence has four floors, an area of around 330 acres, and 340 rooms. The Mughal Gardens are one of the most relevant parts of Rashtrapati Bhavan, and they are usually open during a particular time in spring.

The Change of Guard Ceremony, which takes place in the residence every Saturday and Sunday, is considered a popular attraction. 

The Durbar Hall is a grand hall used for the swearing-in ceremonies of the President and the Prime Minister. 

Can you visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan – President’s House? Yes, it is open to the general public on certain days, but not inside the main building. For more information, please visit the official website.

🇮🇳 Parliament of India - New Parliament House

The Parliament of India is the meeting place for the Parliament of India. It has two houses: the Lok Sabha (House of the People), which is elected by the Indian public through a voting system, and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), which is elected by the members of the Assemblies of States and Union Territories. The President is not a member of either house. 

What is the difference between the old Parliament and the new Parliament of India? The new Parliament of India was opened on May 28, 2023, with the purpose of developing the structure to have more capacity and amenities. 

British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker built the old Parliament House in 1927. It has about six acres of area with a circumference of 560 feet in diameter. There are 543 seating capacities for the members of Lok Sabha and 250 for the members of Rajya Sabha. It has a central hall for joint sessions between the houses.

The new Parliament does not have a central hall; instead, it has a system that allows it to work for joint sessions between the houses without the need for supplementary seating.  It has a seating capacity of 888 members for the Lok Sabha and 300 members for the Rajya Sabha. There is a multimedia display system and media broadcast facilities, and due to its eco-friendly construction materials, it reduces electricity expenses.

What is the role of the Secretariat Building? The Secretariat Building is also known as the Central Secretariat, which gathers the ministries/departments of the Government of India. The building consists of four floors with a symmetrical structure and around 1000 rooms. The building was designed by Herbert Baker during the British Indian Empire. The architectural style of the building is Indo-Saracenic Revival, inspired by Mughal architecture, Hindu temple architecture, Gothic architecture, and Neo-Classical architecture.  

The Secretariat Building is accessible to the public with previous permission and a visitor’s pass.

What is Agra most known for? Agra is famous for many tourist attractions, such as the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort.

🇮🇳 Taj Mahal - One of the Seven Wonders of the World

The Taj Mahal is an Indo-Islamic architectural structure located on the right bank of the river Yamuna in Agra. 

Taj Mahal is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

What is so special about the Taj Mahal? It’s a mausoleum of white marble in memory of the favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, completed in 1648 AD, including a mosque, guest house, the main gateway, and the outer courtyard.

The only bodies buried inside the Taj Mahal are of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. For that reason, the Taj Mahal is considered by many to be a romantic and tragic love story at the same time.

The Taj Mahal is the biggest Indo-Islamic structure, combining Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural traditions. Its construction involved precious and semi-precious stones, red sandstone, and white marble. The design includes a central white marble dome, four minarets, floral and geometric patterns, and many Quran verses.

The reflecting pool is located in the quadrilateral garden, designed to resemble the paradise of Islamic tradition.

🇮🇳 Agra Fort

Why is Agra Fort famous? Agra Fort, also known as Agra’s Red Ford, is a historical fort that served as a principal residence for many emperors of the Mughal Dynasty from around 1565 until 1638. 

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Is Agra Fort worth visiting? Yes, Agra Fort is one of India’s most popular tourist attractions worldwide. The architecture, including the key structures, the opportunity to observe the Taj Majal from its balconies, and the light and sound show are the main reasons why Agra Fort is worth visiting.

What is inside Agra Fort? The architecture of Agra Fort combines Indian, Persian, and Turkish styles. The principal construction material is red sandstone. It has two halls: the Hall of Public Audience (Diwan-i-Aam) and the Hall of Private Audience (Diwan–i–Khas). The Palace of Jahangiri Mahal shows Central Asian and Hindu architectural styles. The Palace of Khas Mahal has marble walls and an amazing view of the Yamuna River.

Fatehpur Sikri

What is Fatehpur Sikri famous for? Fatehpur Sikri (City of Victory) is a small city with the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India. It was used for around 10 years as the capital of the Mughal Empire. 

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique architectural style.

The gateway Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate) is the main entrance to the Jama Masjid. It is considered the highest gateway in the world. The height of the gateway is around 54 meters, with 42 steps at the front of the gateway. 

Why did Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri? Akbar, complete name: Jalal-ud-din Mohammad Akbar, was a Mughal Emperor who built Fatehpur Sikri in honor of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti, who predicted that the emperor Akbar would have three sons. 

Inside the Jama Masjid is the white marble tomb of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti.

Why is Fatehpur Sikri called a Ghost Town? Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned completely by the emperor Akbar in 1610 due to water supply problems.

Jaipur

The capital city of the state of Rajasthan, Jaipur, is also known as the “Pink City” due to Maharaja Ram Singh’s decision to paint the buildings pink to prepare for Britain’s Queen Victoria’s visit.

🇮🇳 Amber Fort

Is Amber Fort worth visiting? Amber Fort, also known as Amer Fort, can be considered a top tourist destination in the state of Rajasthan. The Mughal Emperor of Akbar, called Raja Man Singh, built the Amber Fort to be used as the primary residence for Rajput rulers.

The materials used are red sandstone and white marble. The structure involves many palaces, gateways, courtyards, and a famous mirror work.

The Mirror Palace (Sheesh Mahal) has a huge number of tiny mirrors over the walls and ceilings that produce stunning reflections when sunlight or candlelight enters the palace.

Amber Fort will also show you the Hall of Public Audience (Diwan-i-Aam) and the Hall of Private Audience (Hall of Private Audience), the Ganesh Pol gateway, the Hall of Pleasure (Sukh Niwas) cooling chamber, the Kesar Kyari Bagh garden, and the Jaleb Chowk courtyard.

Visitors can also enjoy an elephant ride at the main entrance of Amber Fort, which is commonly used to ascend to the Amber Fort.

How many steps are there in Amber Fort? There are two staircases of about 500 steps each.

🇮🇳 The City Palace - Jaipur Palace

The City Palace is a complex built by the founder of Jaipur, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, around the early 18th century.

The palace combines Mughal, Rajput, and European architectural styles. It is divided into two main palaces: Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal. 

The City Palace has a Hall for Private Audiences, a Hall for Public Audiences, the Govind Dev Ji Temple for Lord Krishna, a small version of the astronomical observatory Jantar Mantar, the Pritam Niwas Chowk courtyard, and a sound and light show.

Does anyone live in the City Palace Jaipur? The Jaipur Royal Family still uses the City Palace as their residence, but that part of the complex is closed to the public. The part of the palace where the family resides is the Chandra Mahal.

Visitors can also go to the Mubarak Mahal Palace to enjoy the museum that previously served as a reception for foreign dignitaries.

🇮🇳 Jantar Mantar

Why Jantar Mantar is famous in Jaipur? Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory consisting of 19 instruments built by the founder of Jaipur, Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II, who was also a scholar and astronomer.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1734, well preserved and maintained, showing the scientific achievements of India during the medieval period.

What is the story behind the Jantar Mantar? Jantar Mantar is one of the five observatories constructed with the purpose of making more people understand the planetary and cosmic movements.

The most relevant instruments inside the Jantar Mantar are the Samrat Yantra, which can measure time accurately within 2 seconds; the Jai Prakash Yantra, used to know the position of celestial bodies; the Ram Yantra, which can measure the altitude and azimuth of the sun; and the Nadivalaya Yantra to measure the altitude of celestial bodies.

🇮🇳 Hawa Mahal Palace

What is inside Hawa Mahal? Hawa Mahal Palace has a five-story pyramidal structure with many small windows called Jharokhas placed at the front of the palace to look like a beehive. Although the main features of the palace are outside, the inside shows many narrow passages, with small rooms and chambers. There is a natural ventilation system due to the quantity of windows and open spaces.  

Are you allowed to go inside Hawa Mahal Jaipur? Yes, but the palace’s most impressive architecture is the outside structure. In the evening, a show of light and sound about the history of Jaipur and Hawa Mahal takes place.

Why does Hawa Mahal have windows? Hawa Mahal has 953 small windows (Jharokhas) organized in a honeycomb-like structure created to help ladies of the royal family observe outside without being seen.
