🇬🇧 Hyde Park

An area of 350 acres (142 hectares) forms Hyde Park, which is part of the Royal Parks system of London. In 1536, the monks in Westminster Abbey gave the park to Henry VII, and he used it for hunting. The public was allowed to enter in the early 17th century. 

What is Hyde Park in London famous for? In Hyde Park, you will find many attractions, such as the Serpentine Lake, the Serpentine Gallery, the Speaker’s Corner, and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. 

Serpentine Lake is a recreational lake with about 40 acres. Its maximum depth is 17 feet (5.2 m).

The Serpentine Gallery is an art gallery with free admission. It hosts many exhibitions of art and architecture. 

Since the mid-1800s, the Speaker’s Corner has been an area for public speeches and debates.

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is a memorial dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales.

Is Hyde Park across from Buckingham Palace? No, but Buckingham Palace is about 15 to 20 minutes’ walking distance from Hyde Park.

In Hyde Park, you can enjoy cycling, jogging, horse riding, and tennis. During the summer, there are outdoor music festivals and performances.

🇬🇧 Oxford Street

The street is a famous and busy street in the city of Westminster, London that goes from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road. The street was a route to Oxford, which is where the name originated.

Oxford Street offers many shopping options from British and international brands. It’s easily accessible by public transportation.

During the Christmas season, Oxford Street is famous for the Christmas lights that decorate the street. Switching on the lights is considered a ceremonial event that marks the beginning of the holiday season.

🇬🇧 St. Paul’s Cathedral

Sir Christopher Wren designed the cathedral, which was built in 1675 and finished in 1710. Its architectural style is Baroque.

St. Paul’s Cathedral has one of the largest domes in the world, which gives scenic views of London. It has played a significant role in British history. For example, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer’s wedding was celebrated in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and many funerals of important figures were held there, such as the one for Sir Winston Churchill. 

Is it free to go inside St Paul’s Cathedral?  Yes, you can enter St Paul’s Cathedral for free; however, there is a ticket price for access to the Cathedral Floor, Crypt, and Dome Galleries.

What is the difference between St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey? St Paul’s Cathedral is a Cathedral Church of the Diocese of London. On the other hand, Westminster Abbey does not belong to the Church of England because it is a Royal Peculiar, which means that it belongs to the monarch and not to the diocese, and it cannot be overseen by an archbishop or bishop.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as His Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, it is a historic castle with defensive walls and a moat. The moat is currently dried and filled with more than 200 million seeds. The castle is an iconic representation of England.

The tower was built by William the Conqueror around 1078 and was used as a gateway to the capital, a fortress, home of many institutions, a zoo, guard royal possessions and the royal family, a political prison, a place of execution, an arsenal, and most recently a historical landmark for England. 

The Tower of London is currently guarded by Beefeaters, also known as Yeoman Warders, who also perform guided tours. 

The ravens at the Tower of London are an integral part of the place. It’s believed that at least six ravens must be inside the area to avoid the kingdom’s fall. The Ravenmaster takes care of them.

🇬🇧 River Thames: London Bridge/Tower Bridge

The River Thames is the longest river in England, and a national trail follows all its length. Over the River Thames, there are two iconic places of London: the London Bridge and the Tower Bridge. It is common to confuse both bridges, but they are two different structures. 

The London Bridge is the oldest bridge over the River Thames and the only bridge available until 1729. It was originally made of stone, but due to many renovations, it was replaced by concrete and steel.

The Tower Bridge was constructed in 1894 due to the increasing amount of traffic and it looks older than the London Bridge because its design should match the Tower of London.

London Bridge and Tower Bridge are located near each other in the Pool of London on the River Thames. 

The Pool of London can be seen easily from the Tower Bridge. Tickets are available and include panoramic views of London, Glass Floors, Victorian Engine Rooms, and high-level walkways.

🇬🇧 Piccadilly Circus

Why go to Piccadilly Circus? It is a great and popular location for meeting people and spending valuable time together. 

Is Piccadilly Circus like Times Square? Piccadilly Circus is like the Times Square of London with its neon signs, shops, restaurants, theaters, and a location that connects to major streets such as Coventry Street, Regent Street, and Shaftesbury Avenue. 

There is a statue of Anteros (meaning a god of required love in the Greek mythology) in the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain located at Piccadilly Circus.

The London Underground station at Piccadilly Circus is easily accessible to the public, as it provides access to many subway lines.

What is the difference between Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster? The Palace of Westminster is the location where the Parliament of the United Kingdom meets. The Westminster Abbey is a church famous for its long royal history.

In the Palace of Westminster, there are two legislative chambers called the House of Commons and the House of Lords, for which the Palace of Westminster is also known as the Houses of Parliament.

Big Ben is the famous iconic clock tower located in the Palace of Westminster. Big Ben is one of the most representative structures of not only London but also the United Kingdom. People usually refer to Big Ben as the entire tower, but in reality, Big Ben is the Great Bell inside the tower. 

Other iconic structures inside the Palace of Westminster are the Central Lobby, the Victoria Tower, St Stephen’s Chapel, the Robing Room, the Lords Chamber, the Speaker’s Chair, St Stephen’s Hall, the Cloisters, Statues in Palace, and the Works of Art in Palace.

The Palace of Westminster is a UNESCO World Heritage Site open to the public with guided tours available. When you visit London, this is a must-see attraction that cannot be missed.

Westminster Abbey is a royal church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Considered a famous church in the United Kingdom due to the many royal events that took place, such as coronations, burials, and weddings. The church was a Benedictine Monastery that later became a royal church for around 1000 years. 

Can tourists go inside Westminster Abbey? Yes, it is open to the public on certain days and times. There is a fee to pay to enter the Abbey. What is inside Westminster Abbey?  You can visit the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries, The Cloisters, Poet’s Corner, Chapter House, Henry VII Lady Chapel, Nave, Choir Stalls, Royal Tombs, Modern Martyrs, Pyx Chamber, and the Coronation Chair.

The services or prayers are free, and just the abbey exploration has a charge.

🇬🇧 Buckingham Palace

The Buckingham Palace, known as the Buckingham House, originally was constructed to serve as a private residence for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. Later, King George III used the building for the private residence of Queen Charlotte in 1761. The building was expanded and remodeled during the reign of Queen Victoria. In 1837, the building was established as the official royal residence.

Does the Royal Family still live in Buckingham Palace? Yes, it is one of the King’s official residences and also a working place for the Head of State.

Can you go inside Buckingham Palace? Yes, but during the summer only.

What does Buckingham Palace have inside? Many events and receptions are held inside the Buckingham Palace by the King. The State Rooms are the only part of the palace open to the public during the summer. There are 19 State Rooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. 

The Changing the Guard ceremony takes place in front of the palace, and it is available on certain days and times. 

The balcony of Buckingham Palace is well known worldwide as the place where Royals greet the public during important events.

🇬🇧 Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle has served as a royal residence for many monarchs throughout its more than 900-year history. It is one of the largest occupied castles in the world. The castle is also a working place for the royal family, and it hosts many private and public events. 

Is the Windsor Castle open to the public? Yes, from autumn to spring, but only the Semi-State Rooms. Tickets can be booked in advance. 

What is inside the Windsor Castle? The Ceremonial Rooms of the State Apartments, the Historic Rooms of the State Apartments, the Semi-State Rooms, the Crimson Drawing Room, the Queen Mary’s Dools’s House, St George’s Chapel, Moat Room, the Changing the Guard ceremony, and an extensive collection of paintings and objects.

🇬🇧 Leicester Square

Leicester Square’s public square is located close to Piccadilly Circus in the City of Westminster and is considered an ideal place for locals and tourists to hang out. 

What can you find in Leicester Square? You will find cinemas, many small gardens, theaters, events, festivals, nightlife entertainment, many restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.
