Best Way to Pack a Suitcase - 10 Easy Tips

Suitcase organization can make a big difference in your travel experience. Finding the best way to pack a suitcase can help you maximize space and keep your items safe and accessible.

Packing your suitcase efficiently can ensure you will pack all that you need without having to worry about buying those things on your trip.

Reduce your stress while packing by following these 10 easy tips:

1. Roll Your Clothes - Don’t Fold

Benefits of rolling your clothes instead of folding them:

  • Minimize wrinkles
  • Save a significant amount of space

You can also fill in the gaps of a rolling piece of cloth with socks or underwear.

2. Make a Packing List

A packing list will help you pack the essentials. If you just add things until your suitcase is full, you might forget an item or put an item that you do not need—that has happened to me many times.

One time, I bought five pieces of the same item to put in the suitcase. I was so confident I would pack those items because I really use them every day. However, during the day of packing, I assumed I had already packed those items because I thought I would never forget to put something so important. After I arrived at my destination, I noticed I hadn’t packed even one of them, and I had to buy the item from another brand to use it temporarily.

Your list can be categorized by type; this will help you be more precise, but if you just write down all the items without a category, it’s ok too. The idea is to reduce your possibility of forgetting something really important to you.

3. Use Packing Cubes or Folders

Packing cubes or folders can also help you to compress your items into easy to carry units that will increase the suitcase space and reduce wrinkles in your clothes.

4. Pack Heavier Items on the Bottom

When you pack your heavier items at the bottom, your suitcase will be more distributed and balanced, making it easier to control, especially when you have to walk long distances. Also, the base will be stronger, decreasing the chances of delicate items being damaged. I suggest you put the most delicate items in the middle of the suitcase but well wrapped.

5. Separate Liquids and Valuables

Always keep your liquids and valuables separated from the rest of your things. When you group your liquids in one bag, it will prevent you from spills or leaks.

Also, personally, I like to pack each liquid into one small bag and then put them together in another big bag or just leave it like that.

Even if I individually wrap each liquid or fragile item, I make sure they are away from things I will regret damaging.

Any important document, jewelry, or electronics must be packed in your carry-on since critical items must be available and close to you at all times. Your checked luggage can be delayed or lost.

6. Utilize All Available Space

Socks and underwear can be packed in small places in your suitcases. Socks can be placed into your shoes. Belts can be rolled to be placed around your luggage in a way you use your vertical space. Be creative in using all your suitcase spaces, which will help you have a safe space.

7. Pack an Essentials Bag

An essential bag, especially for women, can be life-changing since it contains necessary medications, toiletries, a new pair of socks, or any other important items you might need to use on your flight until you arrive at your destination. I usually pack deodorant, a pair of socks, a comb, my favorite cream, and toiletries in my essential bag, which must be kept with me in the carry-on.

8. Wear Your Heaviest Items

If possible, wear your heaviest items, especially if you need to bring a heavy jacket. Not only will they take almost half of your suitcase, but they are sometimes heavy. Definitely wear your boots, jackets, and sweaters if your travel requires them.

9. Label Your Bags

It is advisable to add a label to your suitcase with your contact information, and it is even better if you can add it in a place that is not visible or easy to remove. This will help to identify your luggage if it is lost or just while waiting for it to be picked up after arrival. There might be other people using your exact design of suitcase, and it is even more difficult to recognize them when they are new, too.

10. Weigh Your Suitcase

Just using a small luggage scale can determine if you can bring more stuff with you or if you will have to pay for overweight at the airport. Always check the airline’s weight requirements.
